Why Ecotherapy ?
Through increasing our exposure to and connection with nature, we develop an inner calm that can improve feelings of well-being. We learn to slow down, giving us time to think more clearly about things, often enabling us to see things with a different perspective. Research has shown that whether through an active pursuit such as gardening or walking, or a passive one such as studying wildlife, being close to nature eases muscle tension and can reduce stress. Some experts put this success down to ‘biophilia’, which is the theory that we have an in-built affinity with nature, and that our disconnection with it is the cause of much of our stress. Being physically active improves our health in many ways such as helping with weight management, improving muscle strength, reducing high blood pressure and improving stamina. ‘Feel good’ hormones – endorphins – are released too, giving you a sense of positivity and will (hopefully) lead to a good night’s sleep afterwards.
